Our very own inkstone here comes from Zhaoqing, Guangdong Province, and yes you have guessed it right, it belongs to the Duanyan family. This particular piece also exhibits a unique characteristic known as stone eyes as seen in the third picture. Before carving on these special duan stone, the artist will plan their design in a way where the greenish rings are well integrated to the overall aesthetic of the inkstone. In the case of this particular piece, the stone eyes are used as dragon pearls while the borders are carved with dragons flying among the clouds.

On the neck of the vase, we can find the two illustrations on both sides of a mother and son playing with a dragonfly. While on the body of the vase, the front and back are painted with Chinese characters while on the sides, we find the popular birds and flowers motifs. On the lip of the vase we can also find colourful vines and flowers painted on it just to give the piece a more complete and consistent look. Lion shaped ears on the neck and prancing serpents on the shoulder also helps to give this piece extra character.
The two dragons that dominate the front of the vase is depicted playing with dragon pearl to symbolise power and nobility, while the crane that takes centrestage at the back of the vase represents longevity. On both sides of the vases' neck, we can also find a pair of handles shaped like branches of the elegant cherry blossom to symbolise good beginnings as well as to balance our the masculinity of the piece.
On the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, Chinese around the world celebrates "Duan Wu Jie" by enjoying handmade glutinous rice dumplings and organising dragon boat competitions. This festival would not have existed without our 34th Hero, Qu Yuan.
